Surf Retreats

Why we started this

We built the week we couldn't find.

We weren't complete beginners. We weren't advanced either. For a long time we thought we were intermediates, until we worked out we weren't quite that either. Somewhere in the middle, plenty still to learn, and not many places set up to actually teach it.

So we built our own week. Tailored to your level, in places we love, with the people who know those places inside out. We lived at the end of a dirt road in Costa Rica for almost three years, and most of this comes from there.

Filling up Guests on a surf and yoga retreat walking the beach at sunrise in Pavones, Costa Rica

Costa Rica Surf Retreat

Pavones. A kilometre of left, no wetsuit required.

The end of the road in southern Costa Rica. Warm water from sunrise, jungle behind the house, and a wave that keeps going long after you expected it to stop. Days here run on horses, boats and long dinners.

Pick this one if you want warm water and no wetsuit, jungle at your door, and a week genuinely far from everything. It's a long way to get there. That's the point.

Booked directly with us

No platform, no middleman, no call centre. You're talking to the two people who run the week.

Nothing paid up front

We confirm availability within 24 to 48 hours. Payment only comes up after that.

Half now, half later

A 50% deposit holds your spot. The rest is due 60 days before you fly.

If plans change

Our cancellation terms are short, in writing, and shared before you pay anything.

Own group, own dates? From six people we run the whole week privately, in these places or somewhere else entirely. That's a tailor-made trip, or bespoke for teams and brands.

The week

Surf at the centre. Everything around it just as considered.

The waves are why you come. The food, the adventures and the hours in between are what make the week work.

Surfer riding a clean green wave
01

The surf

Daily sessions with local coaches, two surfers per coach at most, at whichever spot is working that day. Drone video analysis is part of every week.

A spread of fresh food on the table at the retreat house in Costa Rica
02

The food

Three meals a day, fresh and wholesome, cooked by people who live here. It's the fuel for everything else you're doing, and it's the reason the table stays full long after the plates are empty. Ten people who arrived as strangers, eating together every night.

Guests horseback riding through the green hills above the coast in Costa Rica
03

The adventures

Horses, boats, waterfalls, tuktuks, turtles in season. You came a long way. You should see more than the lineup.

04

The rest

Yoga in the afternoon, a massage for shoulders that earned it, and hours where nothing at all is planned.

Why so few

A handful of weeks a year.
That's the whole model.

We could run twenty weeks a year. We'd have to hand them to staff, and then you'd be booking a product instead of a week with us. So we don't. We're both there, all seven days, every retreat. Two people can only be in one place at a time, and that's the entire reason there aren't more of them.

The same goes for the people you'll meet. Every destination is built around locals we've known for years. They coach, they cook, they take you into the hills, and they eat at the same table as you. By the end of the week you're not really a guest anymore.

A small group around one table for a week turns into something. A big one never would.

The rhythm · Costa Rica

What a day looks like

No two days are identical, because the swell has opinions. This is roughly how a week in Pavones goes. Portugal runs to the same rhythm, with a wetsuit and a different view.

Surf retreat morning session on the beach at Pavones, Costa Rica
  1. 06:15

    First light, first session

Coffee on the deck, boards on the roof, in the water before anyone else has found the place.

  2. 09:00

    Breakfast

Gallo pinto, fruit from the garden, homemade bread, and more coffee than is strictly necessary.

  3. 11:00

    Video analysis

We film the morning session and go through it together. This is where most of the progress actually happens.

  4. 13:30

    Lunch at one long table

Fresh, local, and enough of it. Followed by the slowest hour of the day.

  5. 14:30

    The afternoon

Some days that's horses into the mountains or a boat across the gulf. Other days it's a hammock and a book. Both count.

  6. 16:00

    Yoga as the heat drops

On a deck surrounded by jungle. Shoulders, hips, and everything else that has been paddling since sunrise.

  7. 18:30

    Dinner, then whatever happens

It usually runs late. Nobody has ever complained about that.

It's all handled

You arrive. We've done the rest.

One price. You book a flight, we take care of everything from the airport onwards.

  • 7 nights in a place we'd book ourselves, ensuite rooms
  • Daily surf sessions with local coaches, split by level
  • Drone video analysis, included every week, not an extra
  • Boards and a theory class
  • Daily yoga, tuned to surfers' bodies
  • All meals, fresh and wholesome. Dietary wishes are no problem
  • Local adventures off the water, different in every destination
  • One massage, because your shoulders will ask for it
  • Transfers from the nearest airport and every drive to the surf

The adventures change per place. Costa Rica means horses into the mountains and a boat across the gulf. Portugal leans towards tuktuks, Lisbon and sunset picnics. The full list is on each retreat page.

Who these retreats are for

We keep it small on purpose. It suits some people better than others.

  • You want to surf, and also switch off and reconnect.
  • You'd rather a small group than a big crowd.
  • You're coming solo, as a pair, or with a few friends. All of it works.
  • You want coaching that meets you where you are, whatever your level.
  • You care as much about dinner as about the session before it.
  • You'd like to get to know a place beyond its waves.

Probably not, if

  • You're after a party hostel with a foam pit.
  • You want room service and a concierge.
  • You need every hour locked in before you fly.
  • You'd rather surf a famous break with sixty people on it.
  • You're looking for the cheapest week you can find.

Don't take our word for it

I really loved how the whole retreat was organized. We had a mix of surfing, yoga, horse riding, boat adventure and free / relax time. I learned a lot from our surf teachers, they were amazing! I like that the group was not big so it was like a small family for a week.
The retreat was extremely well organized and we ate amazing food with newly made friends. They even helped me celebrate my birthday by decorating the house and making me an ice cream cake. We would absolutely love to join another retreat.
At arrival Marthe and Jonne made me feel at home right away. The accommodation was nothing but magic. I came to crank up my surf skills and caught some awesome waves, and the horseback riding through the jungle was kind of liberating.
Good to know

Questions people ask us

The honest answers, before you have to ask.

How do I get there?
For Costa Rica: fly into San José, then on to Golfito. We pick you up there and handle every drive for the rest of the week. Portugal runs from Lisbon. Flights aren't included, so you can pick your own route or add a few days either side.
Which surf level is this retreat for?
All of them, and that's not a throwaway line. We split the group by level and coach in small numbers, one coach to two surfers at most. That works for someone standing up for the first time. It also works for someone who has been surfing for years, keeps getting stuck at the same point, and wants a week that actually moves them past it. Tell us where you are when you book and we'll plan around it.
What about food and dietary restrictions?
Let us know beforehand and the kitchen works around it. Vegetarian, vegan, allergies, all fine. Food matters a lot to us, so this is never treated as an inconvenience.
How does payment work?
You send a request first. We confirm availability within 24 to 48 hours, and nothing is paid before that. A 50% deposit then holds your spot, and the remaining half is due 60 days before you fly. You can pay by bank transfer, Wise or PayPal.
Can I come on my own?
Plenty of people do, and it's worth saying plainly: coming solo is a normal way to do this, not the brave option. Nobody arrives knowing each other, so you're never walking into a group that's already formed. We're there the whole week too. Couples, sisters and small groups of friends book just as often, and the mix is part of what makes the week good.
What if the waves are flat?
They aren't. We only run retreats in places with waves year round, and every location has several spots that work in different conditions and tides. If one isn't doing anything, another one is, and the coaches know which before we leave the house.
What if I don't want to surf every day?
That's fine. There's one surf session a day and you're never obliged to join it. Some people are in for every single one, others skip a day and stay at the house with a book. Yoga, the pool, the massage and the adventures are there either way.
Can we book a private retreat on our own dates?
Yes, and plenty of groups do. With six or more of you we can run the whole week privately, on dates that suit you, in Costa Rica, Portugal or somewhere else entirely. Same houses, same coaches, same food, no strangers at the table. That runs as a tailor-made trip, or as bespoke if it's for a team or a brand.
Why are there only a few retreats a year?
Because we host every one of them ourselves. Both of us, all seven days. We could hand them to staff and run twenty, but then it wouldn't be the thing we're offering. Fewer weeks is the point, not a limitation.
